MEMPHIS, TN — Pareciera que, en un país donde la portación de armas es permitida y existe dentro de la legislación el uso de ellas en defensa propia, esto podría ser una opción, sin embargo hay aspectos que como hispanos se deben considerar.

En entrevista con La Prensa Latina, el oficial Ivory Robinson explicó que, únicamente en caso de que las víctimas sean agredidas al interior de su domicilio, es permisible usar el arma, aún si su estatus es de ilegal. Sin embargo, se debe de tomar en cuenta que si la activación de una pistola o la defensa con cualquier otra arma ocurre en la yarda, patio, estacionamiento u otro punto cercano de la casa, serán procesados por crimen.

El oficial exhortó a que la comunidad hispana deje a un lado el miedo de llamar a la policía para pedir auxilio, “el Departamento no discrimina a nadie”. Una vez que se hace la llamada, las autoridades llegan entre los 3 y 10 minutos siguientes al lugar, para comenzar la búsqueda de los sospechosos por la zona.

Jorge Reyes, un hispano víctima del crimen, cuando fue herido por un delincuente, sus declaraciones las hizo desde la sala de emergencia. Días después trató de comunicarse con el investigador del caso para proporcionarle más evidencias, pero jamás les respondieron las llamadas.

Janet Hooks, directora de Asuntos Multiculturales y Religiosos de la ciudad de Memphis, como gestora de gobierno, puede interceder para que se le dé el seguimiento adecuado a la situación. “Si la gente tiene algún problema con la policía puedo ayudarlos. Si alguien fue herido (por delincuentes), existe un departamento del Estado que le puede dar una compensación”, dijo.

MEMPHIS, TN — It looks like, in a country where people have the right to bear arms to defend themselves, Hispanics victims of crime could defend themselves. There are, however, some aspects that Hispanics should consider before acting.

In an interview with La Prensa Latina, Officer Ivory Robinson explained that it is only allowed to use a firearm when you are inside your home, even if you are illegal. It is, however, good to know that, even in defense against a person with a firearm, if a gun is fired at someone who is in the garden, patio, in a parking lot or close to the house, the person who fired will be charged for crime.

The officer asked the Hispanic community to overcome their fear of the Police and to call them when they need help, “the Police Department does not discriminate against people” he said. Once the call is made, it only takes 3 to 10 minutes for the authorities to arrive and search the zone for suspects.

Jorge Reyes was victim of a crime. He was shot. He reported the crime after he went to the emergency room. A few days after the attack, he tried to call the detective in charge of the case to share more evidences but his calls were never returned.
